DURHAM -- A couple of prize prospects at the Speed Academy Athletics Club ran away with medals at the Canadian Youth Track and Field championships. Wesley Best of Ajax came up with a silver-medal-winning performance in the 200m, while Keith Cyrus Jr. of Pickering won bronze in the 110m hurdles. Both athletes reached the podium in the U18 division.

PICKERING -- The Speed Academy Athletics Club set the track on fire at the Ontario indoor relay championship held at the University of Windsor. The club won the youth division with a team score of 26 points, edging-out the University of Toronto Track Club and Laurel Creek Track and Field Club by just five points.

The Academy speedsters dominated the Phoenix Athletics all-comers track meet held at Variety Village in Scarborough, taking home a total of eight medals.

Tony Sharpe helps score scholarships for track and field stars

Sharpe, the former Canadian Olympian, runs the Speed Academy, a developmental track and field club in Pickering, which has helped dozens of athletes get NCAA scholarships.

The club was founded in 2006 and Sharpe left his corporate account manager’s job at Bell to track athletes full-time a few years later.

“I’m a full-time coach, you know, not something people do often in Canada,” says Sharpe, 59, adding about 50 Speed Academy athletes have received scholarships.
